Experience life on a horse ranch in the heart of the South African bushveld.

At Thandile Wildheart, you don't just visit South Africa. You become part of it.

Work with horses, explore the bushveld, experience ranch life and become part of a small international community in Limpopo.

You’ll be part of daily life on the ranch. Feeding, riding, learning, working and slowly reconnecting with yourself and horses along the way.

t’s real, authentic, and different from what you’re used to.

Flexible start dates

Join us throughout the year on a date that suits you. We welcome a maximum of 4 participants at a time to keep the experience personal.

MORE THAN JUST A VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Come for the horses. Stay for the experience.

Thandile Wildheart is a small-scale horse volunteer program in South Africa, located at Thandile Country Lodge near Bela-Bela in Limpopo.

Your days are spent getting involved with the horses. From feeding and grooming to handling, groundwork, training and riding.

But the experience doesn't stop at the horses.

You'll live surrounded by the South African bushveld, become part of daily ranch life and have the opportunity to experience the country far beyond the typical tourist route.

Only four volunteers at a time.

That means a more personal experience, more guidance and the opportunity to genuinely become part of the place.

Alongside the horses, you’ll also be surrounded by wildlife such as giraffes, zebras and other animals that roam freely on the land.

"I loved experiencing the real side of Africa. Not just the beautiful views and safaris, but everyday life on the ranch.

Being here pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow in confidence, while always feeling supported by the people at Thandile.

I learned how much work goes into caring for horses, but even more how rewarding the connection with them can be.

A truly unique and meaningful experience.''

''The Thandile Wildheart Program truly felt like an adventure of a lifetime.

Living in such a remote and peaceful place took some getting used to, but it quickly became something I loved — from the quiet surroundings to the incredible sunsets and starry skies.

I loved experiencing real African life, from working with the horses to meeting people from all over the world and being surrounded by animals every day.

Not only did my riding skills improve, but I also built a deeper trust and connection with the horses — and grew as a person along the way.

I arrived feeling nervous, but left feeling like part of a family. I’m incredibly grateful for this experience.''

''My time at Thandile Country Lodge was truly one of the best experiences of my life.
From the very beginning, it didn’t feel like volunteering. It felt like home.

What made this experience so special were the people. Everyone at the lodge is warm, genuine and welcoming. I didn’t just make friends here. I found a second family.

I loved contributing to the guest experience, especially by helping with horse rides. I was given the trust to work independently, while also receiving guidance whenever needed.

This is something no one can ever take away from me. I will carry this experience with me forever and I will definitely be back.''

“My time at Thandile Wildheart Volunteers was an incredible experience. I had no experience with horses, but everything was explained so clearly that I felt comfortable right away. The horses are calm and well-trained, which made riding through the bush such a special experience.

From the moment you arrive, you feel at home. The people are warm and welcoming, and you’re surrounded by animals. From dogs and horses to zebras and even giraffes.

Every day is different, from working with the horses to going on safari or exploring new places. You learn something new every day and there’s always a lot of laughter.

I loved it so much that I will definitely come back!”
